The shortlist has been announced for The 2014 Newspaper Awards, the only awards that are devoted to celebrating the best in print and digital news media production and innovation.

Gary Cullum, director of Newspaper Awards, says: “The 2014 panel of judges really had their work cut out this year. Not only were they presented with around 1,000 newspapers, both print and digital, the quality of entry was tremendous. The shortlist once again provides a showcase for all that is excellent in the newspaper industry both from this country and around the world.”

Battling to win National Newspaper of the Year are The Daily Telegraph, Financial Times, ‘I’, The Independent, The Sun, The Guardian and The Times. In the Weekend category the Eastern Daily Press and Sunday Herald are up against national titles like The Sunday Times and FT Weekend.

2014 is also the year of hyperlocal entries with the Kentishtowner, Hackney Citizen Peckham Peculiar and Lincolnite shortlisted in several digital and print categories.

There is a particularly strong showing in both the under and over 25K circulation Regional Newspaper of the Year categories with some major titles nominated including the Hull Daily Mail, Western Morning News, Daily Echo and The Journal.

The Newspaper Awards features 16 categories designed to showcase the best in both printed and digital media. All the winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Tuesday 1April at the London Hilton.
